WHY DO WE OVERBREATHE?

Did you ever wonder how ÒstressÓ affects you the way that it does?  The nature of ÒstressÓ has to do with the way in which you meet a challenge.  ÒEmbracing a challenge,Ó has one set of effects, and Òdefending oneself from a challengeÓ has yet another set of effects.  Embracement means Òbeing present,Ó connecting, and learning, and defending means armoring, isolating, and disconnecting.  Breathing patterns that incorporate overbreathing, create physiological crisis and a mindful defensiveness that unleashes a cascade of behaviors that Òprotect youÓ from ÒthreatÓ including people, things, and yourself.

Overbreathing, like any other behavior, can be learned triggered based on personal history around events such as public speaking, meeting new people, emotional encounters, challenges at work, couples conflict, test taking, classroom learning, operating equipment (cars, computers), and financial challenge.  Overbreathing is often a defensive behavior that can mediate every known stress symptom, and can do so immediately and profoundly.
